Welcome to Root + Restore!

Welcome to Root + Restore! I am so glad you're here!

My name is Catrina Ballard and I am the owner and founder of Root + Restore. After spending a few years pursuing a new creative dream in calligraphy and hand lettering, I found that in many of my conversations with fellow creative professionals, there was something missing.

Pursuing a creative profession as a means of living is a huge honor- not all are so lucky to do what they love day in and day out. However, so many creative people that I have spoken with deal with insecurity and feeling like they are alone in their struggles. They feel like they *can* do the work, but have a hard time sharing it with the world. Many creative professionals may compare their success level with others based on arbitrary measures, like social media followers or engagement or how strong their business plan may be. Many times, creative professionals come up short in their feelings. They feel like they simply aren't enough, or don't do enough.

My professional and academic background is in Counseling and Psychology, and my journey to starting Root + Restore is a twisty one. I got my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from LeTourneau University in 2005 and my Master's in Educational Psychology (Community Counseling) from Baylor University in 2007. I then went on to spend 8 years working in Higher Education and using my counseling skills for outreach and and support for Bachelor's and Master's level students in the University setting. After I had my son, I started dabbling in calligraphy and grew to love it. I have always been very creative, but never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to help support my family by pursuing a creative profession. As I mentioned before, the more connections that I made and the more relationships I built in the creative world, the more stories I heard that repeated the same struggles.

"I'm not good enough."

"I wish I was as popular as {xyz} creative."

"I may be talented, but no one recognizes my work."

"Others see me as successful, but they don't know how hard it is for me to share my work."

Root + Restore exists to challenge those thoughts, feelings and emotions head on. It exists to give you the space and freedom to engage in why you feel the way that you do, and to give you tools to help combat those feelings. One of the biggest lies that I think we all believe is, "I'm alone in this." Root + Restore wants you to know that you, in fact, are NOT alone. You can do this. We are here to help.
