What’s your go-to, must-watch movie?

You know those kinds of movies that you love so much they become a staple?

The kinds of movies that you fall in love with the first time you watch it, and then return to so often that they become an old friend. A comfort when you need it, a laugh when you're down, or simply an inspiring story to remind you who the hell you are.

Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society is one of those movies for me. It reminds me of the power of love, of overcoming, of community and connection, the importance of telling our stories and it's easy on the eyes.

Watching this movie takes me outside of myself and reminds me of the pain that so many people carry in their stories, while also reminding me of the importance of doing our part to help encourage others in their own journeys.

In one of the many plotlines in the movie, the main character Juliet is dating a handsome, rich American soldier named Mark (short for Markham... I die). They have lots of fun together and seem like a perfect match.

Case closed, full stop.

Except... they aren't.

If you looked at two potential partners on paper and one list said:

  1. Classically handsome

  2. Wealthy

  3. Respectable family

  4. Military service

  5. BIG FAT DIAMOND RING

And the other said:

  1. Ruggedly handsome

  2. Pig Farmer

  3. Smells... like a pig farmer

  4. Has... pig farmer money

Which would you choose?

I know... that feels like a trick question, right?

Well... it is. A little.

If you've seen the movie, you know how it ends, who Juliet ultimately falls in love with and why.

If you haven't, I am officially begging you to put it on your weekend's to-do list. Post haste.

The point to all of this is that there's a big business lesson here:

Fit. Matters.

Not only does fit matter, but if you have it, you have it.

If you don't, well, you just don't.

How much energy have we spent (in our personal and business lives) convincing ourselves that someone is right for us, when we know deep down that they aren't?

In Juliet's case, she was dating someone who she desperately wanted to be the perfect fit. He was, in many respects.

In your case, it may be that you have hired someone that will provide a service you desperately need.

Or, maybe you have put all of your hard-earned eggs into this basket, and you can't stomach saying goodbye to someone who isn't working out.

Maybe you feel shame, frustration, anger or plain desperation to MAKE. THIS. WORK.

OR, maybe you're on the other end. The end where you KNOW you need someone to support your growing business. You just don't want to deal with all of the aforementioned struggle, so you keep, well, struggling.

Or you feel afraid to wade into the hiring pool because you don't want to end up with someone that makes you question all of your life choices up until this point.
